REPORT ABOUT A DIFFERENCES IN SCRIPTURES TRANSLATION

Dear Sirs/Madams

Please recheck the translation of Buddhist teaching in “Sabbasava Sutta - All the Fermentations” from the Original.

There are following translations from this website:

http://www.buddhanet.net/budsas/uni/u-kinh-trungbo/trung02.htm

( (by Bhikkhu Thich Minh Chau)

2- The Blessed One said, "Monks, the ending of the fermentations is for one who knows and sees, I tell you, not for one who does not know and does not see. For one who knows what and sees what? Appropriate attention and inappropriate attention. When a monk attends inappropriately, unarisen fermentations arise, and arisen fermentations increase. When a monk attends appropriately, unarisen fermentations do not arise, and arisen fermentations are abandoned. There are fermentations to be abandoned by seeing, those to be abandoned by restraining, those to be abandoned by using, those to be abandoned by tolerating, those to be abandoned by avoiding, those to be abandoned by destroying, and those to be abandoned by developing. (English translation by Bhikkhu Thanissaro)

I do not sure which translation is correct or close to the meaning in the Original (Pali). But if there was a different meaning, it would lead to practice wrong Buddhist teaching and never get an enlightenment, why?

Because in paragraph 1 (Vietnamese language) shows the method of practice is - như lý tác ý. In paragraph 2 ( English) shows different method of practice - Appropriate attention.

Method “như lý tác ý” in English can be translated - Auto-self suggestion. For example: When someone has an greed thought, one must remind oneself to expel a greed mind :  “This greed mind must give away”. Only that way all greeds, hatreds and delusions gradually disappear. This method teach us only remind oneself to expel evil thought.

I am not an English person so I do not know how one can practice this “Appropriate attention” method. I thought Buddha has wisdom, so he must teach his disciples concrete method to eliminate all fermentation. He could not teach us generally. If we understood general meaning, each of us would choose an appropriate method, then there would be millions methods to get enlightenment.

But I feel that there are something different here. So please recheck  with the Original.

Why do I write this article and sure that method  “như lý tác ý” is the Auto-self suggestion? Because my master has experienced about this method and has gotten a result from this method. He teaches us and all his students have experienced about it. The mind naturally becomes calm and peaceful without any force and without focusing on anything. This method is very simple and easy to practice.

Buddha always  emphasizes repeatedly to use the Auto self suggestion method to eliminate evil minds and develop good mind: With using the Auto-self suggestion, unarisen fermentations do not arise, and arisen fermentations are abandoned. Without using the Auto-self suggestion, unarisen fermentations arise, and arisen fermentations increase

There are more Buddhism teachings in Majjhima Nikaya 20 - Vitakkasanthana Sutta -The Relaxation of Thoughts (Translation by Bhikkhu Thanissaro) talk about the method Auto-Self Suggestion (http://www.buddhanet.net/budsas/uni/u-kinh-trungbo/trung20.htm)
Chính nhờ diệt trừ chúng, nội tâm được an trú, an tịnh, nhất tâm, định tĩnh. Chính nhờ diệt trừ chúng, nội tâm được an trú, an tịnh, nhất tâm, định tĩnh.

4- The Blessed One said: "When a monk is intent on the heightened mind, there are five themes he should attend to at the appropriate times. Which five?
"There is the case where evil, unskillful thoughts -- connected with desire, aversion, or delusion -- arise in a monk while he is referring to and attending to a particular theme. He should attend to another theme, apart from that one, connected with what is skillful. When he is attending to this other theme, apart from that one, connected with what is skillful, then those evil, unskillful thoughts -- connected with desire, aversion, or delusion -- are abandoned and subside. With their abandoning, he steadies his mind right within, settles it, unifies it, and concentrates it. Just as a skilled carpenter or his apprentice would use a small peg to knock out, drive out, and pull out a large one; in the same way, if evil, unskillful thoughts -- connected with desire, aversion, or delusion -- arise in a monk while he is referring to and attending to a particular theme, he should attend to another theme, apart from that one, connected with what is skillful. When he is attending to this other theme, apart from that one, connected with what is skillful, then those evil, unskillful thoughts -- connected with desire, aversion, or delusion -- are abandoned and subside. With their abandoning, he steadies his mind right within, settles it, unifies it, and concentrates it.

In Vietnamese language, Bhikkhu Thich Minh Chau translated from the Original source into Vietnamese is “tác ý”, that means use method Auto-self suggestion to remind the mind.
In this Buddhist teaching, Buddha taught us there are 5 ways to apply this Auto-self suggestion method to eliminate evil minds which depend on each situation. If first situation still did not work, then one should use the next second way, and so on.
For example: In the first case, Buddha told us to remind the mind an opposite way of the way the mind is thinking. It means when the mind think about to steal something. We must remind to expel evil thought away: “This evil mind must go away, stealing is a bad, to bring suffer to oneself and to others, go away”.
It is probably my English is not enough to understand the translation meaning of the author - Bhikkhu Thanissaro. What do you think what is a meaning of the word “attend”? and how have you been practicing?
If both method “tác ý” and “attend” were the same meaning. I would be glad to hear that. Let me know.

In Anguttara Nikaya - 1. Ekakanipàta - II. Nãvaraõapahàna Vagga. -Expelling obstacles.  Buddha also taught us to apply this method every paragraph to expel desire, anger, restlessness, torpor, arrogance, and doubt.

3…10                                                                                   (by Bhikkhu Thich Minh Chau)
But in English translation about this teaching I could not find any author remind about this method. Why?
For example: Main Translation  by  Sister Upalavanna  (2) by A.D.Jayasundere
 (http://www.metta.lk/tipitaka/2Sutta-Pitaka/4Anguttara-Nikaya/Anguttara1/1-ekanipata/002-Nivaranappahanavaggo-e.html)
11 Bhikkhus, I do not know of a thing more conducive to the arising of non-arisen sensual desires and the development of arisen sensual desires as an agreeable object. Unwise reflection of an agreeable object
arouses non-arisen sensual desires and develops arisen sensual desires. This is the first.
12 Bhikkhus, I do not know of a thing more conducive to the arising of non-arisen anger and the development of arisen anger as an angry object. Unwise reflection of an angry object
arouses non-arisen anger and develops arisen anger. This is the second

In other Buddhist teachings, we can find that Buddha taught us to use Auto-self suggestion method to eliminate wrong view, wrong intention, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness, wrong concentration, wrong knowledge, etc,. And use this method to develop right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration, right knowledge, seven factors of enlightenment (Samyutta Nikaya), etc,.
You can re-read all Buddhist teachings and realize that Buddha use this method in all the process of practice from beginning to the end of enlightenment. This method is a key leads to succeed, without it the practitioner died or sink, because it is a buoy or a float for us to pass an ocean. Have you seen that we have been sinking?
Dear sirs and madams. This is not my method, this is not my master’s method or someone else’s method. This is the method that Buddha had recommended us to use in order to eliminate all fermentations to achieve enlightenment. He already had used it to achieve enlightenment, so why we can miss or underestimate it. If you read all Buddhist teaching, Buddha said that this method is one meal of other important parts to achieve seven factors of enlightenment. So please recheck the translation with the original.
With this method we can heal all sickness such as cancer, HIV/AIDs and so on. If someone practices correctly, one can control sickness and never visit doctor or take any medication, pills. If someone practices wrong, one will visit doctor, take medication, pills and die with pain in the bed or wheelchair. You can ask and answer yourself.  When you have sickness, have you visited doctor, taken medication, pills since you have practiced Buddhist teachings? Buddha taught us everything. He had not hidden anything. We just do not understand the right meaning of his teachings.
Do you remember the first time Buddha come out from his palace and see what was happening in the human life? They were an old man, a sick man, a death man and a monk. So his purpose was to find a way to overcome a suffering of Life, Age, Sickness and Death. He found it, and taught us. That is why Buddhism can lead people to control their Life, Age, Sickness and Death which are the main sufferable factors of human life.
When I read about two translation scriptures, I have a question why in Vietnamese language scripture Bhikkhu Thich Minh Chau had written about the Auto-self suggestion, but in English language scripture Bhikkhu Thanissaro had not written about this method? I think you also have the same question. The difference is very important. This missing part can affect to our practice.
Please recheck the English translation. If there are so many mistakes or missing useful information in translation, I think Buddhist Association need to recheck all translations of Buddhist teachings, especially English Buddhist teaching translation. This job will bring benefits for all Buddhists now and future generation of the world.

I am sorry about to arise this question, related to Bhikkhu Thanissaro and others. I am very respect to all authors who have translated valuable Buddhist teachings for us to study. Forgive me, if you consider this information is not useful.

Unfortunately, we only have a website with Vietnamese language: http://chonlac.org/

My master has been writing books to teach us step by step to practice to achieve enlightenment. He explains the right meaning of Buddhist teaching from the Vietnamese translation script. He has been answered and revealed all paranormal phenomena and superstious phenomena. How does it work? What does make it works? Is there a life after death? Is there a ghost? Why do some children have a talent (infant prodigy) such as mathematic, physic, astronomy, etc.? Answer about natural phenomena, disaster and so on.

 Thank you for your attention.
